What is Reiki & What are the Benefits?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a holistic method of healing that involves the laying on of hands (or hover technique when necessary).  Reiki promotes the body’s natural self-healing process.

Stress has been implicated as a causative factor in many forms of illness.  Stress increases the occurrence of injuries, adversely affects our immune system, and increases susceptibility to illnesses, which reduces productivity and one’s quality of life.

Reiki relieves stress and produces a state of well-being, freeing up the body’s energy to enhance healing.  Reiki is used to help with a wide range of physical and emotional problems.

Reiki is all about balance. It works on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual layers of our being.  Until recently, most individuals have focused only on treating the symptoms rather than the cause of the symptom in our bodies as well.  Reiki is very Eastern in its approach to healing.  Most of our physical ills, especially those that reoccur over time, have a root cause in an emotional, mental, or spiritual block in our body.  By helping the body’s energy to realign itself properly, Reiki releases these “blocks”, freeing us of the physical effects caused by them.  This can be very subtle and is often not as “immediate” as taking a pill.  However, the effects are often longer lasting.

What Can Be Expected During A Session.


Reiki is provided to fully dressed individuals while sitting in a chair, standing or laying on a massage table.  The recipient will be asked to remove their shoes and get comfortable.  The Reiki practitioner will gently lay her hands along the recipient’s body allowing the universal energy (Ki) to flow through her to promote the recipient’s natural healing process.  A good analogy is that Reiki works like acupuncture, but without the needles.  A typical session lasts an hour, however it is possible to apply Reiki in shorter or longer time frames.  Even though with just one session the recipient may experience positive results, a series of sessions is usually recommended for long-term benefits.


Reiki distance sessions are provided via phone or zoom. Individuals will be in a quiet space where they can be comfortable and not be disturbed for 30 minutes to an hour. In my experience, individuals receive the same results whether in-person or online.

Physical/Emotional Sensations:

Experiences vary among individuals when receiving Reiki.  Right away one may notice that the practitioner’s hand is getting hot: This is the flow of Reiki energy.  One may experience an overall feeling of well-being and relaxation, or one may feel nothing at all.  Reiki is a subtle art, and the effects may not manifest themselves immediately or with simply one session.  Because the energy is directly related to the overall balance of the individual receiving Reiki, some may find themselves having a strong emotional reaction. 

It is not uncommon to burst out laughing or crying, or to experience physical sensations or vivid memories during a session.

Reiki is considered an enhancement to modern medicine.
